Full face roller bit drill heads are used in very hard rock formations with strengths > 100 MPa. They make drilling through rock in a single drilling cycle possible without timeconsuming and costly tool changes. The rock cuttings are usually conveyed by the air-lift technique into a collector box mounted on top of the drill head. After having drilled to a certain depth, the full face drill head is retracted and the collector box is emptied.

Choice of the insert's shape, size, brand are based on the actual working condition. It can adapt to various types of rock which from 30 MPa to 300 MPa.

In the context of Reverse Circulation Drilling (RCD), a full face drill head is the specialized cutting tool used to excavate large-diameter shafts—often ranging from 1.0m to 7.0m—typically in hard rock or underwater conditions.Unlike standard drilling where cuttings are pushed to the surface outside the drill pipe, the RCD full face head is designed to facilitate the "Reverse" flow, where cuttings are sucked up through the center of the drill string.1. Working MechanismThe head is attached to a heavy drill string and rotated by a power swivel.Cutting: The weight of the drill string (and sometimes hydraulic pull-down) forces the cutters into the rock.Removal: Compressed air is injected into the drill pipe above the water level. This creates a density difference (the "airlift" principle), which creates a vacuum effect at the drill head.Intake: Cuttings are pulled through suction ports located on the face of the drill head and transported to the surface through the internal diameter of the drill pipe.2. Anatomy of an RCD Full Face HeadAn RCD head is a massive steel structure specifically engineered for high torque and verticality.Roller Cutters: The face is populated with tungsten carbide insert (TCI) roller bits. These rotate independently to crush rock into small fragments that can fit through the suction intake.Suction Box / Intake: A central opening (or multiple ports) where the slurry and crushed rock enter the drill string.Stabilizers: Large "wings" or rollers on the side of the head that maintain the verticality of the borehole and prevent the head from wobbling (oscillating).Nozzles: These may inject fluid to keep the cutters cool and help "flush" the cuttings toward the center intake.3. Key Advantages

Feature

Benefit

Borehole Stability

The borehole remains filled with fluid, providing hydrostatic pressure that prevents the walls from collapsing.

Hard Rock Performance

Extremely effective in rock with high compressive strength (over 100 MPa).

Cleaning Efficiency

Because cuttings are sucked directly from the cutting face, the bottom of the hole remains very clean, ensuring better end-bearing capacity for piles.

Depth Capability

RCD is one of the few methods capable of drilling very deep shafts (100m+) at large diameters.

4. Technical Comparison: RCD Head vs. Drilling Bucket

Feature

RCD Full Face Head

Standard Rock Bucket

Operation

Continuous (cuttings removed while drilling).

Intermittent (must be hoisted to surface to empty).

Diameter

Optimized for very large diameters (>2500mm).

Generally limited to 2500mm or less.

Water Level

Requires a high fluid level to operate the airlift.

Can operate in "dry" or wet holes.

Torque

Requires massive, constant torque.

High torque, but "breaks" for emptying.

Common ApplicationsBridge Foundations: Large diameter piles in riverbeds or marine environments.Offshore Wind: Drilling for jacket foundations or monopiles in seabed rock.Ventilation Shafts: Creating deep vertical shafts for mining or tunneling.Secant Pile Walls: When creating heavy-duty retaining walls in hard ground.
